CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

Kayak to Morro Spit
Another amazing day full of joys to the senses, closeness among the three of us, and a deep contentment in thinking of it.  There is a wide spit of land, about three miles long, between Morro Bay and the open Pacific.  It seems to have a high spine down the middle, with various areas of soft, lovely sand on the bay side, green plants and bushes in the middle, and the rougher sand with some rocks and shells that comprise the ocean beaches along this shore.

We set off with Buddy in our inflatable kayak from the town side of the bay, and paddled through sleepy, moored boats over to the spit in warm sunshine.  After dragging the kayak up onto the sand so that the incoming tide wouldn't steal it away, we set out across a landscape of soft sand.
Gradually we headed up the dunes and through a landscape of unusual bushes and green growth.  As we crested the hill, we looked down on the vibrant Pacific waves tumbling towards the beach, accompanied by their gentle roar.
Buddy reveled in the freedom to run unleashed throughout all this terrain, digging when the sand was soft, chasing birds on the ocean shoreline, and searching the beach for treasures of sticks.
We three strolled down to the north end of the spit where there is a rocky jetty guarding the narrow entrance to the bay.  This scene, as all areas were that day, always has huge Morro Rock in the background.  This landmark can be seen from miles away both on land and sea, and is almost always an integral part of any photo of Morro Bay.  (This is one of Sandra's favourite photos.)
We strolled back down the beach for our lunch.  As we sat munching away, we were awed by the lovely scene before us.  Except for the surfers near the end of the spit, only one other person walked along the beach in the several hours we were there, and he strolled over and told us he'd come the three miles from the other end where the spit broadens out into a state park.
We reveled in having this wonderful place to ourselves, lying in the sunshine and enjoying each other.  Our reverie was ended with Buddy kicking sand onto us.
We headed back over the hill to the bay, launched the kayak, and drifted with the current past the quiet, anchored boats, and back to the town shore.  Amazed and delighted is how we both feel to have explored this lovely place, and had such an adventure in the sun in early February.  We will return ….
